How to Check Camera2 API Support (Before Installing LMC 8.4)

LEGACY, LIMITED, FULL and LEVEL_3 explained

LMC 8.4 and every other GCam port depend on Android's Camera2 API. Checking your phone's Camera2 support level takes one minute and tells you whether LMC 8.4 will work well, partly or not at all.

Install a free app such as Camera2 API Probe, open it and read the Hardware Support Level for camera 0. LEVEL_3 or FULL means LMC 8.4 should work well; LIMITED means it may work with fewer features; LEGACY means GCam ports will most likely not work.

What Is the Camera2 API?

The Camera2 API is the part of Android that lets apps control the camera: exposure, focus, white balance, burst capture and RAW. Google Camera's HDR+ and Night Sight need this control to capture and merge many frames. Phone makers decide how much of it they expose. That is why the same LMC 8.4 APK can work perfectly on one phone and crash on another.

How to Check Camera2 API Support

  1. Install a Camera2 checker. Install a free app such as "Camera2 API Probe" from the Google Play Store.
  2. Open the app. Open it and allow camera permission if asked.
  3. Find camera 0. Look at the section for camera ID 0, which is usually the main rear camera.
  4. Read the hardware level. Check "Hardware Support Level": LEVEL_3 or FULL is best, LIMITED is partial and LEGACY is poor.

What Each Level Means

Hardware levelMeaningLMC 8.4 / GCam result
LEVEL_3Highest level, adds extra features such as advanced reprocessingExcellent – all features
FULLFull manual control and burst captureVery good – HDR+ and Night Sight work
LIMITEDOnly part of the features are availableMixed – often HDR+ only; some modes crash
EXTERNALExternal/USB cameraNot relevant for phone cameras
LEGACYOld camera interface mapped to Camera2Poor – app usually fails

Check the main camera first (ID 0). The front camera and other lenses may have different levels.

Also Check RAW and Manual Sensor

Camera2 checker apps also list capabilities such as RAW, MANUAL_SENSOR and BURST_CAPTURE. GCam ports work best when these are supported. If RAW is missing, HDR+ Enhanced may not work; use HDR+ instead.

Typical Results by Brand

  • Samsung, Xiaomi/Poco (Snapdragon), OnePlus, Motorola: usually FULL or LEVEL_3 on the main camera.
  • Realme, Oppo, Vivo: many models are FULL; budget MediaTek models can be LIMITED.
  • Infinix, Tecno, itel, Walton: many models are LIMITED or LEGACY. See LMC 8.4 for Infinix and Tecno.

Each lens can report a different Camera2 level.

Can You Enable Camera2 API Without Root?

No. If your phone reports LEGACY or has Camera2 disabled, changing it needs root access and editing system files, which can void warranty and break updates. We do not recommend it for most users. If your phone is LEGACY, keep your stock camera and use its Night or Pro mode instead.

Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to common questions about LMC 8.4.

How do I know if my phone supports Camera2 API?
Install a free app such as Camera2 API Probe and check the Hardware Support Level for camera 0. FULL or LEVEL_3 means full support.
Is LIMITED Camera2 enough for LMC 8.4?
Sometimes. LMC 8.4 may work with HDR+, but HDR+ Enhanced and some modes can crash on LIMITED phones.
Can I enable Camera2 API without root?
No. Changing Camera2 settings requires root access and system edits, which we do not recommend for most users.
Does LMC 8.4 work on LEGACY Camera2 phones?
Usually not. Phones with LEGACY support normally crash or show a black screen in GCam ports.
