LMC 8.4 R17 is the build released just before R18. It introduced new highlight and noise options in the test patcher, a Radius Gain control and Samsung metering mode. Many users still keep it because their favourite configs were made for it.

LMC 8.4 R17 (file LMC8.4_R17.apk) was released on 3 May 2023. Its default package name is com.google.android.GoogleCameraLMCR17. It added LDR Lite Highlight, Sabre Noise, a Radius Gain section and Samsung Metering Mode. For new installs, LMC 8.4 R18 is the better choice.

What's New in LMC 8.4 R17

  • New test patcher options: "LDR Lite Highlight", "Sabre Noise" and "Disable Preserving Highlights". The last option removes the limit on how bright highlights can appear and works together with the HDR Ratio setting.
  • Gain section with Radius Gain: a new section for sharpening control. Radius values only work when the main Sharp Gain is set above 0.
  • Samsung Metering Mode: added to the System Setup section (credited to iDan). It helps Samsung phones measure exposure the way the stock camera does.
  • Other fixes for stability and devices.

The release page also mentions the org.codeaurora.qcamera3 package name for Snapdragon phones and com.samsung.android.ruler for Samsung phones, which were offered in R15 and R16.

How to Install LMC 8.4 R17

  1. Download the R17 APK for your phone.
  2. Allow installs from unknown apps for your browser or file manager.
  3. Open the APK and tap Install.
  4. Copy your config into the /LMC8.4/ folder and restore it by double-tapping beside the shutter button.

LMC 8.4 R17 vs R18

Image quality is the same in both builds. R18 only adds interface changes: a full-height exposure slider, noise and AWB model loading, a viewfinder FPS option, a black theme, better default lens IDs and an extra Iris package for Samsung. Configs made for R17 work in R18 too.

Choose R17 if a config was made specifically for R17 and you prefer its menu layout. Choose R18 for everything else.

Tips for Using R17 Highlight Options

  • Turn on "Disable Preserving Highlights" only for night city shots where lights look too dim.
  • Keep Sharp Gain above 0 if you want to use Radius Gain; otherwise the radius values do nothing.
  • Samsung users: try Samsung Metering Mode if photos look too dark or too bright compared with the stock app.
